If children have earrings in on P.E. days they will not be able to take part in P.E. that day.

Children who have earrings in must either; not wear them on P.E. days or be able to take them out themselves. Staff are not allowed to take them out or tape them over. Wearing earrings in P.E. represents a potential hazard not only to the wearer but also to other children. Medical advice confirms that jewellery worn in physical education lessons is an unnecessary risk and should be avoided at all times – a risk we at St Mary Magalene’s are not prepared to take whilst your children are on school premises/in our care. Serious accidents have occurred as a result of contact between pupils wearing earrings or studs and other pupils or equipment, thus damaging the ear, or where items of jewellery have caught in apparatus and torn the ear lobe. Thank you for your support and understanding in this matter.

As you may be aware, in Year 2, Key Stage 1 SAT’s will take place during May. Though this may seem a long way off, in reality the children need to prepare now to be ready for the assessments and tests they will undertake. In addition to the work we are carrying out in school, we kindly ask that you set aside some time each week to support your child in the following areas: Reading Books Each child has a reading book from the graded reading scheme. Several pages of this book should be read regularly by the child to an adult, talking about and predicting the story. It is not necessary to read a full book every night. The pages read should be noted in your child’s planner. This will help your child to develop his/her decoding skills and comprehension of the text. We will listen to your child read as much as is possible in school, but cannot stress how  important it is that you read with them at home on a regular basis – your input is vital in ensuring your child continues to progress in this area. Spellings Every Friday the children receive spelling words to learn. They are tested on these words on the Friday of the following week. The children should choose at least five of the spelling words and put them into exciting and interesting sentences on the back of the spelling sheet. A specific focus for the sentences will be explained to the children when they are given their spelling sheets. (If your child would like to complete all ten of their spelling words into sentences that would be excellent!).  Ideally, if an adult is available to help the child with these sentences, it will extend his/her knowledge of vocabulary, punctuation, handwriting, spelling and sentence structure. This will be very beneficial to the development of the child’s writing. Mathematics The children in Year 2 are mainly focusing on 2, 5 and 10 times tables, though some children will be introduced to the 3 and 4 times tables. Most weeks the children are asked to revise one or more of these tables. In addition, homework books are given out on Friday for return to school on the following Friday.  This may include worksheets for English or Maths (or both!), to consolidate their learning and understanding in relation to work carried out during that particular week.
